Project Overview

Meghchhaya Anandakannon

A Commitment to Sustainable, Inclusive, and Environment-Friendly Urban Greening

Bandarban is one of the most scenic hill districts of Bangladesh, where hills, rivers, clouds, waterfalls, forests, indigenous culture, and natural beauty come together to create a distinctive tourism identity. Centering on these natural and cultural features, a child-friendly, senior-citizen-friendly, and tourist-friendly urban park can be developed in Bandarban town. This park would serve as a safe, vibrant, healthy, and environment-friendly public space for the city.

The core concept of this park will be:

“A meeting place for play, walking, relaxation, and culture in the heart of nature.”

1. Project Objective

In the context of rapid urbanization, population pressure, and the limitation of open green spaces, the need has been felt to establish a planned, aesthetic, and environmentally sensitive urban park. In this context, the Sustainable Urban Eco Park — Meghchhaya Anandakannon is a timely, public-welfare-oriented, and visionary initiative.

Meghchhaya Anandakannon is not merely a park; it is a multidimensional civic infrastructure where environmental conservation, public recreation, social harmony, healthy living, and cultural practice have been considered in an integrated manner. The main philosophy of this park is to create a safe, clean, orderly, and nature-based open environment amid the busyness of urban life, where people of all ages can benefit equally.

The proposed park will include well-planned walkways, child- and senior-friendly recreational facilities, landscaping based on native tree plantation, seating areas, open courtyards, amphitheater facilities, a memorial zone featuring a Shaheed Minar and Liberation Tower, lighting, food and safe drinking water facilities, washrooms, a book corner, and waste management facilities. Through these components, the park will develop into a complete, humane, and functional urban public space.

One of the most important aspects of this project is its sustainable development-based planning. Through the conservation and plantation of native species, creation of natural shade, use of environment-friendly materials, rainwater management, biodiversity-supportive green design, and low-impact infrastructure development, the park will become a long-term environmental asset. As a result, it will be considered a valuable urban heritage not only for the present generation but also for future generations.

The social significance of Meghchhaya Anandakannon is also highly important. It will be an inclusive space where opportunities will be created for children’s development, youth creativity, safe participation of women, comfortable leisure for senior citizens, and family-centered social interaction. At the same time, it can serve as a suitable platform for organizing national and local observances, cultural programs, social awareness activities, and civic engagement events.

This park will play an important role in enhancing the image of the district, improving public health and mental well-being, strengthening social bonds, and creating an example of sustainable urban planning.

The Sustainable Urban Eco Park — Meghchhaya Anandakannon is a far-reaching, people-friendly initiative that will connect environment, heritage, culture, and civic needs into one unified vision, laying the foundation for an improved, livable, and humane urban future.

The main objective of this urban park is to create an open, safe, and attractive recreational center for the children, adolescents, senior citizens, families, local residents, and tourists of Bandarban town. Respecting the natural environment of the hill town, such a park is needed where children can play, senior citizens can walk regularly and rest, families can spend quality time, and tourists can experience the identity, culture, and natural beauty of Bandarban.

2. Main Planning Concept

The park can be planned in such a way that the identity of Bandarban is clearly reflected. The elements of architecture, landscape, seating areas, gates, pathways, lighting, signage, and play equipment may incorporate the impressions of hill waves, river flow, bamboo patterns, local craftsmanship, and indigenous culture.

The park design will primarily focus on four key aspects:

  1. A safe and joyful play environment for children
  2. Comfortable walking paths and seating areas for senior citizens
  3. Open recreational areas for families and tourists
  4. Environment-friendly, climate-resilient, and nature-based urban design

Proposed Major Components

  • Main entrance gate
  • Children’s playground
  • Walking path for senior citizens
  • Open lawn and seating deck
  • Exercise corner
  • Cultural plaza and tourism information corner
  • Drinking water facilities
  • Washrooms and drinking water points
  • Small café/tea corner and souvenir corner
  • Solar lighting
  • Landscape garden
  • Security and CCTV system
  • Native trees and flower garden
  • Bamboo grove or bamboo screen
  • Stone seating areas
  • Rain garden
  • Rainwater harvesting system
  • Path planning while maintaining the natural slope
  • First-aid corner
  • Disability-friendly ramps and pathways

3. Proposed Zoning

A. Children’s Play Area

A safe and colorful play zone can be provided for children. This area will have separate play facilities according to age groups so that both younger and older children can play safely.

Possible facilities include:

  • Slides, swings, climbing frames, rope play, balance bridge, small adventure trail, and soft rubberized flooring
  • Shaded seating areas
  • Observation benches for guardians

B. Walking Path for Senior Citizens

A comfortable, safe, and shaded walking path should be provided around the park for senior citizens. This walkway should be level, slip-resistant, and planned with sufficient resting places.

Proposed features include:

  • 5 to 6 feet wide walking path
  • Slip-resistant pavers
  • Wheelchair-accessible and easy-movement pathways
  • Seating benches at regular intervals
  • Shade-providing native trees
  • Light exercise equipment
  • Low-level lighting along the pathway
  • Emergency support points
  • Drinking water facilities

This path will not only serve as a walking route but also as a place for social interaction, rest, and mental peace.

C. Cultural and Identity Zone

Bandarban’s unique cultural identity can be presented within the park. Through this, tourists will not only visit the park but also gain an understanding of Bandarban’s history, ethnic communities, rivers, hills, forests, and biodiversity.

Possible features include:

  • Exhibition walls on the culture of local ethnic communities
  • Information panels on hills, rivers, and biodiversity
  • Use of bamboo, wood, and stone
  • Motifs inspired by local craftsmanship
  • A small open stage or cultural performance space

4. Environment-Friendly and Climate-Resilient Design

The park should be developed in harmony with Bandarban’s hilly natural setting and designed to be climate-resilient. In hilly areas, rainfall, slope, soil erosion, drainage, and landslide risks need to be carefully considered.

Environment-friendly planning may include:

  • Preserving the natural slope
  • Ensuring rapid drainage of rainwater
  • Using permeable pavement
  • Rain gardens and bio-drains
  • Solar lighting
  • Less concrete and more greenery
  • Use of local materials such as bamboo, wood, and stone
  • Conservation of existing trees
  • Plantation of new native trees

Bandarban Urban Children’s Park and Senior Citizens’ Walking Path is not merely an ordinary park; it can become an important social, cultural, and environmental center of Bandarban’s urban life. Here, children will play safely, senior citizens will walk for wellness, families will spend quality time, and tourists will experience the nature and culture of Bandarban.

This park can be a practical step toward presenting Bandarban as a “tourism city based on hills, rivers, culture, and nature.” Through proper planning, environment-friendly design, and respectful presentation of local culture, it can become an exemplary urban public space for Bandarban town.
